0:00- [Narrator] Tell me if this voice sounds familiar.
0:01- [Man] Sweet lion of Zion!
0:04- [Narrator] What about this one?
0:05- [Man] In brightest day, in blackest night.
0:08- [Narrator] Okay, you definitely know this one.
0:10- 50 years have passed, and I do not age.
0:14- [Narrator] We could easily keep going through
0:16his 300 other characters, but let's just cut to the chase
0:19and meet the man behind the voice.
0:23(energetic music)
0:24This is Phil LaMarr, and he's a voice actor.
0:27- I'd say the ones that I'm probably best known for,
0:30Hermes Conrad, certified bureaucrat,
0:32from the show “Futurama.”
0:35- Great cow of Moscow!
0:38Virgil, Virgil Hawkins, aka Static Shock,
0:41from “Static Shock.”
0:42John Stewart, Green Lantern, from “Justice League.”
0:46- No evil shall escape my sight.
0:48- Ollie Williams, the weatherman, from “Family Guy.”
0:51- Ollie Williams has the story, Ollie?
0:52- I'm at the wrong airport.
0:54- Oops, well thanks, Ollie.
0:55- Wilt, from “Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.”
0:58One of my favorites is Dracula
0:59from “Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.”
1:01And of course, the samurai known as Jack, from the cities
1:06of the same name.
1:08- He who wears a mask cannot see what lies within himself.
1:12- When I was working on “Pulp Fiction,”
1:14(record scratches) - [Narrator] Wait, you were in
1:15“Pulp Fiction”?
1:16- Of course, yep.
1:18Here, let me jog your memory.
1:19(fun surf music)
1:21- Marvin, Marvin, Marvin!
1:23I'd knock that (expletive) off if I was you.
1:26- [Narrator] Ohhh, you're Marvin.
1:28- [Phil] And I was one of the original cast members
1:30on Fox's “MADtv.”
1:32- [Narrator] No way, I love MADtv.
1:33- Then you must have been a 14-year-old boy in the ‘90s.
1:36- [Narrator] Very funny, Phil, anyway, you were saying?
1:39- With Samurai Jack I felt there should be some tie
1:43to his roots.
1:46So it was a very light Japanese accent on English, we began
1:51to refer to as a young Asian Clint Eastwood voice.
1:55- [Narrator] And Hermes from “Futurama,”
1:57where did that voice come from?
1:58- When I first started out doing the Jamaican accent
2:00for Hermes, it was pretty much a heavy puhtwah.
2:03And it muddied up the comedy,
2:07so eventually your Hermes accent got pulled back,
2:12which is a lot easier to understand.
2:14- [Narrator] What about John Stewart from “Justice League”?
2:16- To me, if you got a chest this big,
2:18you gotta have a deep voice.
2:20My name is John Stewart, Green Lantern of Sector 2814.
2:23- [Narrator] And how about Static Shock?
2:25- That voice was basically just myself at 14.
2:29It was just that idea of, you know, a young kid,
2:32you know, who's a responsible guy but, you know, he just happens
2:36to have electrical powers.
2:37And to me, that is the character I relate to the most.
2:40You know, Static is just, you know, me.
2:44(lively jazz music)
2:47The differences between stage, film, voice acting
2:51are really technical.
2:53If that plane leaves and you're not on it,
2:55you're gonna regret it.
2:56One of the benefits we have in animation
2:58is, I can play this guy, and I can also play this guy.
3:03- You'll see what I'm talking about.
3:04- Just right there in the same day, same room,
3:06same microphone, you know ‘cause that's why we got into it,
3:09to play characters.
3:10You will bow before the Kah.
3:13(lively jazz music)
3:18(electronic tones playing)
